Crypto Currency

Understanding crypto currencies and their applications is crucial before investing. This section introduces fundamental concepts of crypto currencies and  provide information on what role they play in Star Atlas.

What Is Cryptocurrency?

A cryptocurrency is a digital or virtual currency that is secured by cryptography, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit or double-spend. Many cryptocurrencies are decentralized networks based on blockchain technology—a distributed ledger enforced by a disparate network of computers. A defining feature of cryptocurrencies is that they are generally not issued by any central authority, rendering them theoretically immune to government interference or manipulation.

- Key Takeaways

  • A cryptocurrency is a form of digital asset based on a network that is distributed across a large number of computers. This decentralized structure allows them to exist outside the control of governments and central authorities.
  • Experts believe that blockchain and related technology will disrupt many industries, including finance and law.
  • The advantages of cryptocurrencies include cheaper and faster money transfers and decentralized systems that do not collapse at a single point of failure.
  • The disadvantages of cryptocurrencies include their price volatility, high energy consumption for mining activities, and use in criminal activities.

- Understanding Cryptocurrencies

Cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual currencies underpinned by cryptographic systems. They enable secure online payments without the use of third-party intermediaries. "Crypto" refers to the various encryption algorithms and cryptographic techniques that safeguard these entries, such as elliptical curve encryption, public-private key pairs, and hashing functions.

Cryptocurrencies can be mined or purchased from cryptocurrency exchanges. Not all ecommerce sites allow purchases using cryptocurrencies. In fact, cryptocurrencies, even popular ones like Bitcoin, are hardly used for retail transactions. However, the skyrocketing value of cryptocurrencies has made them popular as trading instruments. To a limited extent, they are also used for cross-border transfers.

- Blockchain

Central to the appeal and functionality of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is blockchain technology. As its name indicates, blockchain is essentially a set of connected blocks or an online ledger. Each block contains a set of transactions that have been independently verified by each member of the network. Every new block generated must be verified by each node before being confirmed, making it almost impossible to forge transaction histories.1 The contents of the online ledger must be agreed upon by the entire network of an individual node, or computer maintaining a copy of the ledger.

Experts say that blockchain technology can serve multiple industries, such as supply chain, and processes such as online voting and crowdfunding. Financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) are testing the use of blockchain technology to lower transaction costs by streamlining payment processing.2

- Types of Cryptocurrency

Bitcoin is the most popular and valuable cryptocurrency. An anonymous person called Satoshi Nakamoto invented it and introduced it to the world via a white paper in 2008. There are thousands of cryptocurrencies present in the market today.

Each cryptocurrency claims to have a different function and specification. For example, Ethereum's ether markets itself as gas for the underlying smart contract platform. Ripple's XRP is used by banks to facilitate transfers between different geographies.

Bitcoin, which was made available to the public in 2009, remains the most widely traded and covered cryptocurrency. As of May 2022, there were over 19 million bitcoins in circulation with a total market cap of around $576 billion. Only 21 million bitcoins will ever exist.3

In the wake of Bitcoin's success, many other cryptocurrencies, known as "altcoins," have been launched. Some of these are clones or forks of Bitcoin, while others are new currencies that were built from scratch. They include Solana, Litecoin, Ethereum, Cardano, and EOS. By November 2021, the aggregate value of all the cryptocurrencies in existence had reached over $2.1 trillion—Bitcoin represented approximately 41% of that total value.4

Use case in Star Atlas

Here are the 2 main use cased of crypto currency in Star Atlas.

  • POLIS: As an asset, POLIS is a low-velocity, long-term store-of-value that incentivizes governance of the ATLAS economy for its long-run production. The POLIS DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) is tasked with the minting, distribution, and redistribution of ATLAS within the ATLAS treasury, and earn portions of the returns in ATLAS to the developments they vote to fund. With a long-term perspective, DAO governors will ultimately be able to drive the direction of Metaverse development. Even to the extent that the founding Star Atlas development team could be voted out as the primary vendor for game assets and game design. Other areas of more immediate focus include: economic revisions, feature releases, asset release schedules, and optionality to incorporate player-created content. The total supply of POLIS is permanently fixed and does not increase.
  • ATLAS: ATLAS is the form of currency/income in the game. The market clears at the price at which the buy-side perceives the value of the production of in-game assets, as ATLAS can be earned within the game. The currency is inflatable. The monetary mass should grow at roughly the same rate as the in-game economy. New ATLAS is created to reward in-game activities (see diagram). The POLIS DAO can adjust the parameters regulating monetary rewards for different in-game activities, both on the global level and granularly, per activity type.

Register on an Exchange

Now that you have a better understanding of how crypto currency works, it is time to open your first account and purchase some crypto currency. This introduction will demonstrate how to create an account using the Binance platform.

Binance Website: https://binance.com

Create a Binance Account

A Binance account acts as your gateway into crypto trading. But before you can buy your first bitcoin, you’ll need to open an account.

1. Head to the Binance homepage and click [Register] in the top right corner.

2. Input your email address and choose a secure password. If you prefer, you can also sign up using your mobile number rather than email. If you’ve been given a referral code from a friend, now is also the time to enter it.

3. Follow the instructions for verifying your account by inputting the code sent to your email address or mobile number.

4. Once you’re verified, you should now be set up with your Binance account. You’re one step closer to buying cryptocurrency, so let's dive into making your first crypto purchase.

How to secure your Binance account

Using a strong password and our security features will help keep your funds safe. Make sure to start with the following security steps.

- Use a strong password and change it regularly

This one is self-explanatory, but you would be choked with the number of people that still use passwords that are simple and easy to remember. Your password should always contain uppercase and lowercase characters mixed with symbols and letters. And of course, make sure you keep it safe and do not share it with anyone.

- Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

We strongly recommend you set your account up with Two-factor Authentication (2FA). This creates an extra layer of security, meaning that even if hackers compromise your password, they would need access to your physical 2FA device to log in.

The Google Authenticator app or SMS authentication are great places to start. Our Binance 2FA Guide can explain more about the process.

- Enable the Binance Anti-Phishing Code

When you add an anti-phishing code to your Binance account, every email you get from Binance will have this code displayed at the top. You can manually define what code it can be from a series of letters or numbers.

This way, you can be sure that the message you are receiving is actually from Binance and not from a fake email address. In other words, it helps you prevent phishing attacks.

Create a Crypto Wallet

Now that you have registered on a cryptocurrency platform that enables cryptocurrency purchases, we must create a wallet. This cryptocurrency wallet will enable you to engage with SMATH contracts, including buying ships from the Star Atlas website, staking NFT, and much more.

Cryptocurrency Scams and Security Tips

There are many Cryptocurrency scams and Fake Exchanges on the Internet like fake giveaways, fake official Social media accounts on (Facebook, Whatsapp, and Telegram), fake communities and schemes, Crypto-jacking apps and malware but you can ensure your crypto security through proper knowledge and awareness. A few crucial tips are given below that you can follow to maintain secure crypto account.

Fake Exchanges and Apps

Fake exchanges are fraudulent copies of actual exchanges they can look very similar to legitimate exchanges you might think that you downloading the legitimate exchange’s app or clicking on the link that looks like the one that you usually use but you could be mistaken.

These fake exchanges exist for one reason so they can fool you into thinking that you’re using the real deal so that they can steal your money and your personal details.

To keep yourself safe from fake exchanges always bookmark the legitimate exchanges URL and always check the URL before you log In.

For Binance you can use the Binance verify page to check the legitimacy of URLs all Binance groups and social pages can be verified there.

For mobile apps always verify the developer’s details and check comments reviews and the number of downloads. If there are no reviews or comments and the number of downloads is low it’s likely a fake application and this goes for both crypto exchanges and wallets.

Fake Giveaways

If you’ve followed crypto communities online you’ve likely seen fake giveaways typically scammers will ask people to deposit to a crypto address to receive more crypto in return.

There have also been scammers that ask for private keys or other sensitive information. Legitimate crypto giveaways will never ask you to deposit to take part in a giveaway or ask you for private information.

Fake giveaways are usually found on social media platforms scammers comment on posts hoping that somebody will fall for it.

The best way to avoid these scams is to not participate in them, ignore them and move on.

Fake Website

Recently, we have seen an increase in the number of scammers attempting to impersonate websites in order to steal the reputation of the genuine project. They will frequently utilise Google Ads to rank top in Google searches for a project that is comparable to the one you are looking for. After you click on the page, they may ask you to input your private key in an app that looks exactly like Phantom (it's a copy). Another option is that it will allow you to do a transaction. This transaction allows the fraudster to withdraw all of your tokens at any time. This is why it is critical to carefully double-check the URL of the website you are visiting. We also recommend that you create a fresh wallet for each project with which you interact. If you do not have the means to acquire a ledger wallet, this will allow you to safeguard more of your crypto cash.

If you have any drought on a URL or something that might look like a scam, always ask the community for advice (Discord)

Fake Social Media Accounts

Additionally, people can pose as legitimate companies to create fake social media accounts.

Take a look at the following image can you spot the scam the message from the ad Binance underscore account is a scam.

Fake Social Media Accounts
Fake Social Media Accounts

See how easy it is to fake an account and make it look almost identical.

Phishing Attacks

Even if you’re not familiar with online scams, phishing is one that you have undoubtedly heard of. If you haven’t, “Phishing is a type of cyber-attack where scammers pose as a reputable entity or business to deceive people and steal sensitive information.”

Phishing can come in many forms, fake websites, text messages, on social media, and emails. Scammers usually pose as a person or business to try and extract sensitive information from you.

Take a look at this image which one do you think is phishing one of the first places to look when you are not sure about the legitimacy of an email is the email address.

Phishing Attack on Cryptocurrency
Phishing Attack on Cryptocurrency

In the image email, a is a binance.com email address and email b is a Hotmail email address this is a clear indication that email b is phishing, additionally, email b requests that details be sent to WhatsApp.

No legitimate business will ask for details to be sent in that way. There is no single playbook that scammers use to get sensitive information.

You could receive a crypto news article that you didn’t subscribe to and then click on the unsubscribe link, just by clicking that link you could be a victim of phishing.

If you suspect an email or message to be a phishing attempt always report it to your email provider and the company that the scammers are impersonating.

Fake Official Telegram and Whatsapp Group

Another common phishing tactic is scammers lurking on official telegram groups for crypto wallets and exchanges.

When people report suspicious activity the scammers will reach out to that person in a personal message posing as a support agent from the group in question encouraging them to share sensitive information like private keys and logging information so they can steal their funds.

You should never share your private keys or your logging information with anyone otherwise they’ll have access to your accounts.

Fake Communities

Whether you enjoy following the crypto community’s influencers or reading crypto news articles and blogs you should never base your trading strategy or your crypto purchases on what someone else says.

You never know what the person or company’s motives are? they could be paid to promote it or they could be investing in it.

It’s good to stay informed but always follow your own advice and never invest more than you can afford to lose.

When looking at a project, questions you should ask are, who is working on that project? does the team have a strong track record? what is the community like and what are they saying about the project?

Once you have a clear view you’ll be better equipped to decide what is best for you.
